Our Story
Mystical, Magical, Macedonia: Land of Nature, Cradle of Culture. Our story begins in the village of Srcpi in North Macedonia, in the heart of the Balkan Mountains. Vera Stavroff, born and raised in Macedonia, is passionate about her homeland’s hidden treasures; she wants to share them with the rest of the world and put Macedonia on the map. She started Vergina Wines with her son, Jeffrey, to share Macedonia’s little known treasure: beautiful wine.
As a child, Vera learned about the ancient Macedonian tradition of caring for the land and appreciating its abundance of gifts. She enjoyed helping her grandmother collect medicinal herbs that grew wild in the majestic, untouched countryside and watching her grandfather nurture and watch over the vineyard. Vera’s grandfather built a small wood cabin in the vineyard, where he slept every night during harvest season to protect the grapes. In the village, wine was considered food, just like bread and cheese. Each family had its own vineyard and made their own wine in large wooden vats.
Vergina Wines’ mission is to bring joy and happiness, one glass of wine at a time.
History
The Republic of North Macedonia is one of Europe’s last undiscovered wine countries, a natural paradise of vineyards, mountains, lakes and rivers. Macedonia lies at the crossroads of several civilizations which have shaped the country’s culture.
North Macedonia has been described as the “Pearl of the Balkans” and its diverse terrain matches the country’s rich history. Winemaking tradition in Macedonia is many centuries long. The ancient town of Heraclea, established by Philip II of Macedon (the father of Alexander the Great) in 4th century BC, bears witness to the long tradition of wine production and enjoyment.
An old Macedonian proverb says: “If you want to get to know a nation well, sit at their table and drink their wine!”
